Wood floor species guide: oak, maple, walnut, and more

Updated June 2026 · 7 min read · By the D-Lux team

Each hardwood species has its own hardness, grain, and personality. Here’s a quick tour to help you find the right fit.

The hard, everyday species

White oak, red oak, maple, and hickory are all hard and well suited for busy homes. Hickory is the toughest; oak hides wear with its grain; maple keeps things bright.

  • White oak: neutral, durable, on-trend.
  • Red oak: warm and classic.
  • Maple: bright and smooth.
  • Hickory: hardest, most rustic.

The softer, statement species

Walnut and cherry are softer and more dramatic. They shine in bedrooms, studies, and formal rooms where their color and grain take center stage.
